“I was Angry and Bitter”: Chris Hani on the ANC’s Decision to Suspend the Armed Struggle
In a fascinating video, Chris Hani rationalises abandoning “strong personal views” for the good of the party.
Hani, who was assassinated in 1993, was the chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC, before he became the leader of the South African Communist Party in 1991.
Hani reflects on when he heard that the ANC had suspended the armed struggle and military activities without consulting him as a member of the party leadership. He says he was “angry and bitter” at the decision at the time. After consideration as a “disciplined soldier” he decided that it may have been the right decision, but he says he was still annoyed that party leadership was not properly consulted.
