South Africa’s Competition Law Ranked Eighth in World for Effectiveness

The Development of Competition Law and Economics in South Africa The World Economic Forum’s ranking of South Africa’s competition policy in the global top ten shows that the legislation and the handling of cases in South Africa are on par with world standards, Kasturi Moodaliyar told Razina Munshi of Business Day.

Moodaliyar, co-editor of The Development of Competition Law and Economics in South Africa, commented on the recently released Global Competitiveness Report for 2013-14, which places SA’s competition law eighth in the world in terms of effectiveness. This ranking was achieved, she points out, by competition authorities’ continuous efforts to keep in line with international best practices and is a result of the “many successful case outcomes that encourage companies to comply with the Competition Act”.

SOUTH Africa’s competition policy is rated among the top 10 in the world, which competition commissioner Shan Ramburuth says is proof of the enforcement record of the country’s competition authorities.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report for 2013-14 ranks South Africa eighth out of 148 countries for the effectiveness of its anti-monopoly policy. This compares with an overall country ranking of 53rd, down one place from the last report.
