Launch of Voices of Liberation: Ruth First and Albert Luthuli Gets Plenty of Attention in the Media

The recent launch of the Voices of Liberation series was reported on by both The New Age and the SABC. The books are biographies of South Africa’s first Nobel laureate Albert Luthuli and struggle icon Ruth First. Voices of Liberation: Ruth First is compiled by Don Pinnock, and Voices of Liberation: Albert Luthuli is compiled by Gerald Pillay.
ANC MP Ben Turok (who knew Ruth First), author Don Pinnock and Maanda Mulaudzi of the University of Cape Town were in conversation at the launch in Cape Town. They discussed how different these two struggle heroes were, but that they were joined in the common pursuit of justice.
Prof Ben Turok, author Don Pinnock and Dr Maanda Mulandzi from the University of Cape Town this week debated the lives of the late Chief Albert Luthuli and Ruth First.
Speaking on Tuesday night, Jeremy Wightman, director of the HSRC Press, said the aim of the Voices of Liberation book series published by the HSRC Press, “is to ensure that debates and values that shaped the liberation movement are not lost”.
ANC MP Ben Turok says South Africa and its young generation has a lot to learn from the leaders of the struggle for freedom. Turok was among speakers at the launch in Cape Town of the first two books in the Human Sciences Research Council, Voices of Liberation series on former ANC president Chief Albert Luthuli and former political activist and journalist Ruth First.
